VivaPop to Bring the All American Soap Box Derby Back to Greenwich benefiting the United Way

Events

Vivapop is excited to bring the All-American Soap Box Derby back to Greenwich for a unique community and family event. Benefiting the United Way of Greenwich and to be held in conjunction with the United Way of Greenwich's 75th Anniversary celebrations this fall, the VivaPop All American Soap Box Derby is already generating great enthusiasm within Greenwich which in turn generates exposure for corporate sponsors and the United Way.

The last Soap Box Derby race in Greenwich was 1984, 24 years ago. It's been called "The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World", "The Gravity Grand Prix", and many other expansive euphemisms. But to most of the million plus youngsters who've participated, it's just the "Soap Box Derby." Celebrating its 75th anniversary also, it was christened back in 1933, when a Dayton (Ohio) Daily News photographer encountered three boys racing home-made, engine-less cars down an inclined brick street. 1936 would be a climactic year of growth, establishing the Derby as a national institution. Derby Downs, the first racing complex of its kind, was approved as a WPA project and constructed as promised in a city park near the Akron, OH Municipal Airport. NASCAR and Levi Strauss jeans have recognized the importance of the Soap Box Derby and are national sponsors of the event.

Corporate sponsorships are available. Contact TMK Sports and Entertainment for corporate sponsorship opportunities: 203.273.1166. See www.greenwichsoapboxderby.com for more information.

Race Date: Sunday, September 14, 2008.

Race Location: Greenwich Avenue

"Soccer for Sebastiana" is sponsored by the Greenwich Rhinos to help raise funds for our favorite Brazilian soccer mom.

"Not too long ago Sebastiana was dropping Eddie off at soccer practice in Pocos de Caldas, Brazil. A "soccer mom," she was always encouraging Eddie as he worked his way onto the select team in his hometown. Eddie now plays for the Greenwich Rhinos of the SASL. His mom, unfortunately, won't be able to watch him play for quite some time. She was debilitated by a runaway staph infection. She has suffered loss of limbs and in the need of a prosthetic eye. She's recovering, but hospital bills have decimated family finances. Let's help Sebastiana and family recover".
