YWCA calls for nominations for Racial Justice Scholarships for two high school seniors

The YWCA of Greenwich is pleased to announce the call for candidates for its sixth annual Racial Justice Scholarship.  Candidates may be nominated by a member of the faculty of any Greenwich high school or by the general public.  A $500 scholarship will be given to each of two high school seniors who live in and attend a Greenwich school, and who have demonstrated special effort to encourage people to respect differences, to promote equality and to eliminate all forms of bigotry, bias and racism in their school or our community.

Nominations are due by December 15, 2008.  The award will be presented at the YWCA on Thursday, January 15 at 6 p.m.  Winners must be in present on at the YWCA event on January 15 to receive the scholarship.

This award has been created to recognize and encourage youth to take action, whether it is to bring awareness to themselves or others, to have an impact on their communities, or to promote progress in creating an environment where all differences among individuals are respected and celebrated.  Diversity is an integral part of a rich and strong community that enhances the quality of life for all. Eliminating racism is one of the primary missions of the YWCA.

This sale includes about 25,000 books, CDs, DVDs, videos, audiobooks and pieces of artwork, including brand new items and many antiques. Everything from fiction, nonfiction and thousands of children’s books.

For first picks, come to a special preview sale on Friday, Nov. 7 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. For $15, bibliophiles may attend the preview and become a Friend of the Library. On Saturday, Nov. 8 from 9 to 4, the sale is open to all. On Sunday, Nov. 9 from noon to 4, will be the bargain hunter’s delight “bag and box” sale ($3/bag or $5/box).

Water is one of the world’s most precious and valuable resources. However, due to human activity and climate change, it is also one of the most vulnerable. Professor Guswa will discuss the big issues facing our water supply, and steps that can be taken to preserve it.

Drew Guswa joined the faculty at Smith College in 2001 to help launch the Picker Engineering Program – the first engineering program at an all-women’s college. As a civil and environmental engineer, he works to improve people’s understanding of water processes to facilitate informed decision-making. His recent projects have included water system research in the tropical cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica, and the development of Smith’s Ada and Archibald MacLeish field Station for hydrologic investigation.

More than a dozen Fairfield County and Westchester County restaurants are offering some of their finest French culinary selections at a Gala benefit evening with the theme “A Night in Paris / Une Nuit à Paris” on Friday, November 7, 2008, to support the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT. The fundraising event, held at 7 p.m. in the Museum galleries, melds exquisite French cuisine, extraordinary art, and generous community support from these superb area eating establishments as well as several local merchants who are supplying goods and services for the night to ensure a successful Museum fundraising event. Senior members of the Greenwich community are invited to attend Disaster Education Classes at the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross.  Greenwich Red Cross Disaster & Emergency Services staff and Department of Health representatives will provide a 60-minute presentation specifically geared towards seniors.  Learn how to develop an emergency plan, shelter in place, build a disaster kit, and handle medication and vital equipment.  All participants will receive a starter disaster kit with basic supplies and educational information.  

Register now for the next program on Monday, November 21, 2008 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Greenwich Chapter at 99 Indian Field Road in Greenwich. A free lunch will be served.  Senior Citizen Disaster Education Classes are offered for free but registration in advance is required.  To register, call the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross at 203-869-8444, extension 104.
